Paying for Hospital Bills

Pittsburgh hospitals have patient assistance programs to help low-income patients with no or limited insurance pay hospital bills. UPMC, for example, may offer assistance to those who make under 400% of the Federal Poverty Level ($47,550 for a 1-person household.) They often do NOT offer this information. Ask! These programs are called charity care, patient assistance, financial assistance… If you apply and are denied, contact a consumer health advocacy organization such as the Pennsylvania Health Law Project listed in the Consumer Health Advocacy Organizations section to appeal. They can also help you with questions on the application process.
