At the Duquesne Psychology Clinic (downtown) you can see doctoral level therapists for very low fees. Students can be seen for $10 per session and everyone else’s fee is based on his/her income ($1 for every $1000 you make per year). They will reduce fees even further for those under special financial strain. It’s a very professional atmosphere, where the majority of therapists have master’s degrees and are pursuing Ph.D.’s in clinical psychology. Most therapists use a humanistic approach to therapy, which emphasizes collaboration between client and therapist and focuses on the “whole person” of the client. They welcome clients with a wide range of reasons for seeking therapy (e.g. anxiety, depression, relationship problems, eating disorders, desire for personal growth, etc.).

The Web site of Jewish Family and Children’s Services has most of the information that you need to use it. Keep in mind that although it is affiliated with Jewish charities, you don’t have to be Jewish to use their services. You’ll find that they do a lot.

Comment from a website visitor:

I can only speak to the psych services, http://www.squirrelhillpsych.org/ but I can say that they give a good impression of what JFCS Pgh is all about. When I called to set up an appointment, I was transferred to a psychiatric professional who did the initial consult over the phone. He then made decisions about whom I should see and gave my information to her. She called me promptly, and I was set up with an appointment faster than I had expected; the appointment was within a week of my first call.

For payment, the psych services had several options. I did have to meet separately with a person other than my psych professional to have an evaluation. She explained that JFCS first files my info with a county level program to see if I qualify; this program is entirely need-based. Through that program costs can be anywhere between 0$ to 25$ per month for services. I did end up qualifying for that program, but she also said that JFCS has their own sliding scale, for which they evaluate anyone who does not qualify for the Allegheny County assistance. I am not 100% sure, but I think the prices were anywhere from $25/month to $25/session; regardless of what you end up with, this is all inexpensive professional counseling. PLEASE NOTE: JFCS at present does NOT have a psychiatrist on staff (I think for budgetary reasons); although they do have one who consults with their regular staff. If you have need/desire for medications, I suggest that you bring it up at the initial consult and discuss your options; or check www.bewellpgh.org ;-)

I have had only a few sessions with my counselor. Because I did qualify for the county program, we did have to complete some paperwork that included a “treatment plan.” This plan is important and necessary, but it IN NO WAY limits what may or may not be discussed in therapy. For people unfamiliar with the therapy process, it might seem a little intimidating, but please try just to think about it as paperwork. My counselor has been great so far. As you’ll see from the website, they provide the full range (excepting the medication issue) of psychological services.

The building itself is clean and inviting. They employ an outreach person who can help you apply for state/county/local programs. She is helpful, personable, and knowledgeable. She can point you to programs that may help you. PLEASE NOTE: Despite her extensive knowledge base, she is NOT in a position to ‘pull any strings’ for you. She can help you make phone calls and/or fill out web forms, and consult with you about how to get your documentation together. But she is not in a position of leverage with respect to your receiving benefits.

“The Icarus Project envisions a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences of extreme states of consciousness rather than trying to fit our lives into a conventional framework. We are a network of people living with the dangerous gifts that are commonly labeled as bipolar or related ‘mental illness.’

The Icarus Project is a collaborative, participatory adventure fueled by inspiration and mutual aid. We bring the Icarus vision to reality through an Icarus national staff collective and a grassroots network of autonomous local support groups across the US and beyond. “
