SERVICES OFFERED:

The Birth Circle is a grassroots program in Pittsburgh’s East End working with the community to build an integrated circle of care that addresses the needs of childbearing families. We do this by developing knowledgeable, supportive networks of women throughout the East End and the surrounding areas, trained to provide accurate, non-judgmental information about pregnancy, birth and early parenting. By helping women to have positive pregnancy, birth and early parenting experiences, we strengthen women, their families and the community as a whole.

The Birth Circle provides doula (women trained to provide professsional, non-medical labor support) to pregnant women at several health centers. Doulas are available at no charge for patients of East Liberty Family Health Care Center and Metro Family Practce. Women with UPMC for You insurance are eligible for doula services at no cost if they recieve prenatal care at the following sites : Lawrenceville Family Health Care Center, Bloomfield/Garfield Family Health Care Center, Matilda Theiss Family Health Care Center, Shadyside Family Health Care Center, Latterman Family Health Care Center and New Kensington Family Health Care Center or if they live in the following zip codes: 15035 15104 15110 15112 15120 15122 15137 15145 15148 15218 15221. Doulas are also available to any teenager recieving care at Magee Women’s Hospital or attending Magee’s Childbirth With You prenatal care.

The Birth Circle also trains lay women to become Ambassadors in thier communities. Ambassadors are strong, trusted women who provide health information and support to other women throughout their neighborhoods who are pregnant or of childbearing. Ambassadors make themselves available to women informally to answer questions about having a healthy pregnancy and birth wherever those questions come up—on the bus, in the grocery store, at church, at school or work. Ambassador trainings are held each fall. To find an ambassador in your neighborhood, please contact the Birth Circle Doula Office at 412-636-5075.

FEES/DISCOUNTS FOR LOW-INCOME/UNINSURED: There are no fees for women meeting the criteria listed above. At this time, doula services are only provided to women meeting the program criteria.

FREE MAMMOGRAM VOUCHER PROGRAM

You should call 1-888-MVP-0505 right now to see if you qualify for a FREE mammogram, through the Mammogram Voucher Program (MVP). The Mammogram Voucher Program Coordinator will answer your questions and tell you how to schedule your appointment at one of our many health provider partners in 30 counties.

Q: What exactly does the MVP do?
A: The MVP ensures that woman of all ages, backgrounds and economic circumstances have access to quality diagnostic services. Approximately 5,000 vouchers are given out each year to Pennsylvania women who have neither private nor public funds to pay. The MVP provides a woman with repeated and unlimited diagnostic screening and includes not only mammography, but also more extensive procedures such as sonography, biopsy and surgical consultations when medically indicated. It reimburses FDA accredited facilities for the various procedures, as well as providing reimbursement for consultation, surgery, pathology, anesthesiology, hospital and primary care services

Q: Since the Mammogram Voucher Program (MVP) is free, will the care I receive be as good as a “paying customer”?
A: Absolutely. The care you receive will be of the same high quality as anyone else; same doctors, same equipment, same peace of mind.
